MONTHLY MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPS

Monthly Research Meetings    Informal interaction between faculty and trainees is an integral part of our training program.  Since September 2001, Virology Program faculty, their trainees and postdocs, have met monthly for 1-hour sessions on the University of Maryland campus (attendance averages between 30-45).  Two faculty labs present their current research each month.  Talks are given by faculty, postdocs, and senior trainees.  These talks have led to many lively discussions and a much better appreciation and understanding of different systems by both faculty and trainees.  Some of the labs break into groups after the meeting to discuss specific research topics in more detail and trainees also use this time to consult with members of their dissertation committees and co-mentors.  This informal setting has been ideal for establishing relationships and formation of a coherent group. All pre-doctoral trainees are required to attend the monthly meetings.
